At our Fort Lee dental office, one of the most common dental issues that Dr. Alvin Jacobs sees in or patients is tooth decay, and/or full on dental cavities. Because this is one of the most common issues we see, some of the most common services that we offer are dental fillings. It is likely you have dealt with a cavity at some point in your life. Cavities are small holes in the teeth that form as a result of tooth decay. Tooth decay begins when bacteria like tartar or plaque are not properly removed from your teeth through careful brushing and flossing. These kinds of bacteria release certain acids that can eat away at the tooth’s enamel, and so form cavities.
If you have a cavity, you are likely to experience a few specific symptoms, though you may not notice them until later in the cavity’s formation. Such symptoms include: tooth sensitivity, especially in cold or hot temperatures or while eating/drinking something cold or hot, mild to moderate toothache in the affected tooth, increased pain while biting down or chewing, and more. If you are ever experiencing any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment at our Fort Lee dental office at your soonest convenience. We can confirm a diagnosis of a cavity after a careful dental examination provided by Dr. Jacobs. If we do detect any cavities, we will then be able to discuss treatment options with you.
The most commonly used treatment for cavities is the dental filling. Over the years, dental fillings have been made available in a variety of materials, making them more able to suit various needs on an individual basis. Depending on the location of the cavity and the extent of the repair that is needed, Dr. Jacobs will recommend a specific type of material. For teeth that are in the front of the mouth or are otherwise highly visible, we often recommend our tooth-colored fillings rather than traditional fillings, in order to make the dental work more aesthetically pleasing. In the back teeth, where most chewing takes place, we often recommend the use of traditional fillings because of their high level of durability. These recommendations vary on an individual basis.
